Love Letter to Lapland Finland

Today I want to share something with you that is very different to my usual content and writing style. I have written this love letter to Lapland months ago, but I was never quite sure whether Global Brunch would be the right outlet for it. It was one of those things that I needed to write and the words poured out so fast I could barely keep up with typing. I decided to share it with you lovely people after all, because if nothing else, it perfectly sums up my crazy love affair with Lapland.

Love Letter to Lapland

Dear Lapland,

Every time I spend time with you I feel like I belong, like I’m home. If I was Carrie Bradshaw you were my Manhattan. Your snow would be the glitz and glamour, my desire for your wilderness would be a pair of Manolo Blahniks and your dancing Northern Lights would be the hottest party in town. But I am not Carrie Bradshaw and you are not Manhattan. For that I love you even more. You don’t care for materialistic things. You are pure. You are wild and sometimes harsh – but always honest.

I love that it feels like someone stopped the clocks every time I’m with you. You say it like you mean it in a tongue I have forgotten how to speak.

You give me purpose. You’ve captivated me with your charm and yet I feel free. A sense of freedom that I didn’t know existed until we met.

Lapland – you’ve changed the way I look at the world, which made me love you even more. You make simplicity seem majestic. You make the dark seem light. You made me question everything I thought was normal. I’ve realised that need is want, bizarre is beautiful and day is night.

Lapland – your stars are my guidance and your light is my love.

Tell me – have you ever felt this way about a destination? I would love to hear which place your love letter would be about! Do you have this one place you are constantly drawn to and keep visiting? Let me know in the comments below!

Thanks Taryn! It means a lot to hear that. I was really nervous to share this but the wonderful feedback I’ve received has definitely confirmed my decision to publish it.

  3. Dear Maria,
I really liked your loveletter to lappland, it is a destination, to which I will come back for sure. But I have lost my heart even more to Nepal last year. I will have to wait until 2019 to go ther again, but I would like to go just tommorow. It is a so wunderful landscape, generous people and your are always at your limits.
This weekend I enjoyed a husky-trekking in Trappenkamp an a lot of memories to finland. Thanks for our time togehter and my “escape”.
    Best regards, Judith
