Not just that, I’ll also be sharing how you can get your hands on a special offer only valid for you lovely lot (freebie alert).

Meet the neighbours. These guys live right next door to the Aurora Holidays cottages!

They have years of experience in the tourist industry, local knowledge and lots of passion. They always make sure that each holiday is magical from start to finish. In a nutshell: it’s not only the best tour operator to see the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland, but it’s also a really amazing company to work for.

Utsjoki – The northernmost municipality in the EU

So where exactly is Utsjoki? Utsjoki is located in Finland, 450km North of the Arctic Circle in the northernmost municipality of the European Union. The village shares a border with Norway and is surrounded by stunning wilderness. While its location is certainly remote for European standards, it is still relatively easy to get to. By that I mean that the roads are perfectly well maintained, even in winter and you don’t need a helicopter to access Utsjoki.

Utsjoki is the perfect European winter destination: Northern Lights almost every night, beautiful winter scenery and fascinating local culture. The village is by no means touristy, which is great because you actually get to experience the true local way of life instead of just reading about it in a museum.

The municipality of Utsjoki has the highest population of Sámi people (indigenous people inhabiting the Arctic region of Sápmi/Lapland) in all of Finland. Here you can learn about Sámi traditions, history and even try authentic Sámi cuisine first-hand.

Tiina treats both the company and the guests as if they were all part of her family. She is friendly, caring and welcoming to her family, friends and all of her guests. There is no question or situation she would leave unsolved, and she is full of creativity waiting to be unleashed.

Tiina has lived in Utsjoki for 12 years now and has adapted & excelled in the way of life there. She has a passion for the local lifestyle. And more importantly, she has a passion for the Northern Lights that is highly contagious. She really lives and breathes auroras. So it was natural for her to grow a business around this spectacular phenomenon.

When I saw my very first Northern Lights with her in November 2015, she was just as excited and enthusiastic as me. Tiina also shared all of her night photography knowledge with me and showed me how to capture the auroras. In fact she single-handedly turned me into a Lapland addict, (Northern) light nerd and lover of all things winter and I cannot wait to work alongside her again.

Emilia – The Queen of the Great Outdoors

Emilia is my idol for all things outdoorsy and wilderness skills. The very first time I met her, I knew we’d get on. She is originally from Helsinki, but unlike many other Finns she loves the winter and made the move to Utsjoki to work and play in one Europe’s last great wildernesses.

Emilia has been an integral part of Aurora Holidays from the very start.

Not only has Emilia got years of experience in the tourism industry, she has travelled all across the globe herself. As a guide she has been sharing her passion for nature, winter landscape and knowledge of the local culture with the guests.

Emilia combines her badass organisational skills and knowledge of the local area on all her tours. She is caring and thanks to her attention to detail you will always get the help and tips you need to make sure you’re warm, comfortable and safe at all times.

When she isn’t working, Emilia is most likely found out in the wilderness taking her snowmobile for a spin, hiking, fishing or studying the Sámi language and culture.

It depends how much of the country you’d want to see. You could fly into Helsinki and explore the city & surrounding areas for a few days and then take a flight North to Finnish Lapland (Ivalo, Rovaniemi). Flying between North and South might be your best bet if you’re short on time as it takes at least 2 days to drive without much stopping. I’d recommend spending at least 5 days in the North, that way you have a buffer if the Northern Lights forecast isn’t so promising on some days. Plus there is plenty to do and see to fill your time with 🙂
